About the workshop
The university's sewing workshop has 42 workstations on various industrial sewing machines. The ironing room has 5 ironing workstations (2 ironing tables, 3 ironing boards) with suction and extraction and a table fusing press.
The industrial sewing machines offer all possibilities to process a wide variety of textile materials. Fine materials such as silk, denim and leather as well as knitwear/jersey can be sewn. Various additional equipment on the machines expand the possibilities (roller feed, binder, crimping device). Cut edges can be fixed at several workstations. In addition, three automatic buttonhole machines are available for different designs.
The sewing workshop will be closed from 13.02. to 01.03.2023.

During the semester, the sewing workshop is open from 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. and is open outside of courses for the production of semester and final projects and can be used freely. During these times, the workshop management or a student assistant with appropriate training is available as a contact person for consultation.
The opening hours are extended around the middle of the semester. Then use is possible until 7.45 pm. The corresponding times will be announced here on the website, on the workshop door and by e-mail.
The students of the Fashion Design and Scenography – Costume – Experimental Design degree programmes have courses in the sewing workshop in the curriculum of their degree programmes, in which they are instructed in the machines and trained in production. As a rule, they produce their coursework themselves.
For the project-related work of the other degree programmes, it is decided on a case-by-case basis whether instruction or a course is useful, or whether the work is taken over by the workshop management or the student assistants.
Only students enrolled at the university are permitted to use the workshop. For this purpose, they require a current briefing on the guidelines of operational procedures, occupational safety and health protection for their stay in the sewing workshop and the ironing room. Persons who are not enrolled at the university and students who cannot provide proof of the above-mentioned instructions are not permitted to work in the sewing workshop. There is then no insurance cover.
The use of the individual machines and devices also requires workplace-related instruction on the respective mode of operation. The use of the machines without these instructions is not permitted. These instructions and briefings are documented and confirmed with signatures.
The dates for briefings and instructions take place at the beginning of each semester and are announced here on the website, on the workshop door and by e-mail.
Basically, students use their personal working materials such as fabrics and sewing thread. Working tools such as scissors, pins, tailor's chalk etc. must also be provided by the students themselves.
The university only provides the sewing thread for special machines in the basic colours. The workshop management is available for planning the material requirements. The purchase can also be supported.
Interlinings of various qualities can be purchased from the university.
