The world of media and communications is developing at a rapid pace. Finding innovative solutions for the communicative challenges of the future: that is the teaching and learning objective of our master’s programme in Communications Management. Our interdisciplinary method teaches students the foundations of social sciences, humanities and business management as well as specific subject-related and methodological knowledge. Tomorrow’s communicators must not only possess comprehensive specialist knowledge and be able to spot current social trends, they must also be able to assess the impact these trends will have on the communications industry and integrate new knowledge into communications.
Communications Management (MKO)
Communicate tomorrow
We look forward to welcoming committed students who want to shape the communication landscape of the future together with us - freely according to our motto "communicate tomorrow".
Why study with us?
The world of media and communication is developing rapidly. Recognising communicative challenges of the future and developing innovative solutions for them - that is the teaching and learning goal of the Master's course in Communications Management (MKO). This strong practice-centred orientation towards the future distinguishes this degree course from other advanced training courses in the field of communication. It deals with topics that are already appearing on the horizon in the practical world, but are not yet standard in organisations. Access to these topics is gained through science oriented towards practical application.
In addition, Hanover offers excellent access to numerous well-known companies. Internships, student traineeships or theses can be ideally combined with the degree course in this way.
Course contents
Established and new scientific concepts, methods and models from essential areas of communications management are taught with a view to the motto of the “Communicate Tomorrow” degree course. These include society and reference or interest groups, technologies, law or company management. But scientific contents such as theories of communication and social science methods or language in communication are not neglected either. They are all a basic prerequisite for reflective work in the field of communication. However, the point of reference here is always PR practice.
Students have the opportunity to design visionary communication strategies - mostly virtually according to their own ideas, but also in individual cases for concrete clients from business, associations and classic non-profit organisations. Novel and cross-media solutions are expressly encouraged. As a "development laboratory" for the communication of tomorrow, we place great value on individual creativity in addition to market relevance.

Our master’s programme in communications management is based on the principles “ascertain – develop – test – apply”. In the first semester, students gain insight into the foundations of corporate leadership, project management, reference-population research and other topics. Furthermore, they address current trends in media and society, statistical methods of data analysis, national and international issues in communications management, professional ethics and gender issues. In the second and third semesters, students’ creative, empirical and communicative competencies are trained in hands-on projects. Courses on the theories of interest groups, innovation management, aspects of communications technology and strategic controlling round out the teaching content. Depending on their personal interests, students can also choose from a variety of elective courses: Philosophy of Language, Consolidated Statistics, Marketing or Concept Development.
For the Master of Arts, the students must complete an academic final project in the fourth semester and participate in a scientific examination colloquium.
This interdisciplinary study programme focuses particularly on professional practice. Project work, excursions, lectures and courses by external teachers from practice ensure a connection to current developments in the communications and media industry.
Apart from conveying specialised knowledge, our teachers lay great value on fostering and developing students’ social, cultural and personal skills. Our teaching staff encourage and support all students. Guest lectures and workshops led by experts from theory and practice complement our range of courses.
