Over six semesters, our bachelor’s programme in Public Relations conveys compact knowledge of the theory and practice of professional public-relations work. Students learn various organisation forms and areas of work in PR and focus on the communication structures in commercial enterprises and non-profit organisations; they also learn about the work carried out at PR agencies.
Public Relations (BPR)
Theory and practice of professional public relations
In six semesters, the Bachelor's degree course in Public Relations imparts compact knowledge about the theory and practice of professional public relations. Students become familiar with different organisational forms and areas of responsibility in public relations and deal with the communication structures in business enterprises and non-profit organisations as well as the work of PR agencies.

The degree course stands for a high degree of practical orientation. Practical exercises complement lectures and seminars. Project work, excursions and lectures by external lecturers from the PR field ensure a connection to current developments in the industry.

The first three semesters provide insight into teaching conceptualisation, press and media work, internal communication, online public relations as well as digital forms of information and communication. The core programme is rounded out by selected aspects from journalism, linguistics, communication science, business administration and design. In the fourth semester, students undergo a four-month PR internship. Seminars, for instance in strategic communications management, crisis communication, international PR, corporate and product PR, ethics in PR, language and content management and a PR-related project, comprise the curriculum of the fifth and sixth semesters. In order to earn a bachelor’s degree, students must complete an academic final project.
Our programme is based on a great degree of hands-on orientation. Practical exercises complement lectures and seminars. Project work, excursions and lectures by external teachers from the PR industry ensure a connection to current developments in the field. Moreover, the bachelor’s programme in Public Relations offers tutorials in conjunction with selected lectures and seminars. Led by experienced students from higher semesters, first-semester students are introduced to academic work. At the learning agency, PR students work in teams to create a strategic communications concept for a real client from the industry; this concept will be presented as part of a marketable agency pitch. As part of this project, second-semester students will be coached by students from the sixth semester.
Apart from conveying specialised knowledge, our teachers lay great value on fostering and developing students’ social, cultural and personal skills. Our teaching staff encourage and support all students. Guest lectures and workshops led by experts from theory and practice will complement our range of courses. Apart from our functional seminar rooms, the technical equipment at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts encompasses workshops, computer labs, a TV studio, a photo studio and many editing rooms for both audio and video, all of which correspond to modern professional standards.
In general, it is possible for students to spend a semester abroad and have their achievements recognised in our programme. Interested students will receive support from our staff. Furthermore, as an alternative to the internship phase at a partner company, students can spend a semester at one of our partner institutions outside Germany.
In order to apply what they have learned in practice and to gather work experience during their studies, students must undergo a four-month internship in the fourth semester of the bachelor’s programme. As a location, Hanover offers prime access to many well-known companies. This is an ideal way to connect internships, work-study programmes or final projects with studies at the University.
With advances in the professionalisation of the PR industry, the demand for qualified new workers and academic career starters is growing. The bachelor’s programme in Public Relations educates students to think and act in terms of corporate values. Fields of work include national and international communications departments at companies, associations, political parties, cultural institutions, non-profit organisations, government offices and PR agencies.
The Public Relations programme involves full-time study over six semesters of regular study time. This includes the internship phase and completion of the bachelor project.
