The aim of the Master's programme in television journalism is to train students for the current and future television market. In the undergraduate programme, students have learned the craft of television journalism or moving image design - in the Master's programme, they have the opportunity to develop their creativity on this basis and to design television journalistic formats with long runtime such as innovative television pilots. Students also learn to develop them from the idea to the treatment to the post-production. At the same time, the programme qualifies students to work as video journalists (VJ) and deepens their skills in magazine journalism (reporter work, moderation, magazine dramaturgy).

Study TV journalism in Hanover
The Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts has been offering the first Master's course in TV journalism in the German-speaking world since the winter semester 2008/09. The two-year full-time course is a pioneer in Germany: While specialisation is only possible in higher semesters in most journalism degree courses, at the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts you enter the TV field on the very first day.
Practical relevance
The degree course offers a scientific and at the same time practice-oriented qualification, which is also reflected in the degree: In addition to the scientific Master's thesis in the fourth semester, all students produce their own graduation film in the second and third semesters. Since the focus of the degree programme is on longer formats, 30- to 60-minute documentaries, reports and features are common.
Perspectives
The curriculum is specifically tailored to the requirements of television. New formats and developments on the television market are continuously integrated into the teaching. The degree course ends with the Master of Arts in TV Journalism. The degree also entitles the holder to take up doctoral studies.

Students acquire comprehensive skills in the research, realisation and dramaturgical design of documentary and television-journalistic contributions. Hands-on teaching content and scientific investigation are rounded out by courses on the media business, media law and moving-image design.
In the second and third semesters, the Master of Arts programme is devoted to the production of a final film, while the fourth semester involves the preparation of an academic final project: towards the end of their studies, students work independently on a scientific assignment using social-scientific, film-analytical or hermeneutic methods.
This programme is expressly practice-oriented. All our lecturers have many years of professional experience in television journalism. Project support and lectures by external teachers ensure a connection to current developments in the industry and media-related practice.
Apart from conveying specialised knowledge, our teachers lay great value on fostering and developing students’ social, cultural and personal skills. Our teaching staff encourage and support all students. Guest lectures and workshops led by experts from theory and practice will complement our range of courses.
Along with the usual equipment, the technical facilities at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts encompass functional seminar rooms, a radio studio, a television studio, a photo studio and many different editorial rooms for both audio and video (Avid/Adobe Premiere) that meet current professional standards.
A stay abroad during studies is supported and recommended. Students in the master’s programme have the possibility to spend an additional semester at one of our partner institutions outside Germany.
Students who enrol in a master’s programme in Hanover must prove at least four months of relevant practical experience. During their studies, many make the most of the opportunity to gather practical experience by working at production companies or broadcasters. Internships or final projects carried out in collaboration with broadcasters or production companies are an ideal way for students to link work with their studies. At the end of the four semesters, the moving-image productions inherent in the master’s programme result in the creation of an impressive showreel.
After their studies, most graduates start working life with solid qualifications as freelancers or regular members of editorial staff. As a rule, no volunteer training is expected. In the industry, our graduates work in areas such as reporting, presentation and production. They often work on longer formats like features, documentaries, newly developed series, magazine shows, social-media channels or the online moving-image productions of large daily newspapers. Moreover, our master’s programme qualifies graduates to take up doctoral studies.
The master’s programme in Television Journalism and Documentary Film involves full-time study over four semesters of regular study time.
