Applied Computer Science (BIN)

Practical and scientifically based

The Bachelor's degree course in “Applied Computer Science" offers a practical computer science education within six semesters and imparts in-depth knowledge from core areas of computer science. The Bachelor's degree opens up direct entry into the graduate job market for information technology professionals. The degree course can be studied full-time or part-time (at approximately half-time).

Computer scientists are already creating the future of our information society today. Do you want to be part of it? Then study computer science. A subject that for decades has offered excellent career opportunities and ever more possibilities for shaping our lives.

Applications for the winter semester are made directly on the university's application portal (no registration at hochschulstart.de).

Information for International Students

The bachelor's programme in Computer Science is generally taught in German. Only selected modules are available in English for short-term exchange students. For admission as a regular degree-seeking student, a DSH 2 certificate (or equivalent) is required. Please refer to the following pages for further information.

Course contents

Here is what it offers

  • 3 semesters of programming, mathematics, computer systems
  • 3 semesters of Internet technology, computer graphics, software development, information systems
  • One major project in the team every year: Start-up project, programming project, practical project
  • As many practical exercises as lectures
  • Half of the 6th semester: Scientific final thesis, often in companies

Many believe that studying computer science is difficult and a dry affair. Not with us: the study course begins directly in the first semester with practical work on real IT solutions in a small project team. Methodically guided by professors and older students, exciting computer games, autonomous e-cars and cooperatively working robots are created. An annual project exhibition enables first-year students to network with higher semesters at an early stage and to look beyond their own horizons.

Computer science is diverse and exciting

  • Can I actually write a new app for my mobile phone on my own? Maybe one that shows me how my friends are doing at the moment?
  • How does Facebook actually work? And how do Internet companies earn their money?
  • Why can music services recommend new music so accurately?
  • How does encryption work and how can I protect myself with it? My emails, my smartphone, my company? From the competition or from secret services?
  • How can robots be taught to see, walk and think?
  • How does data actually find its way to me through the Internet? What traces do I leave behind, and which can I prevent?
  • What does Google know about me when I search there and store my data there, and what do they do with it?
  • When will the self-driving car arrive, and what problems do we still have to solve for it?
  • How does a navigation system actually find the shortest route? And how do you manage to fit all the world's road maps into a small chip?

These are all exciting questions that computer scientists are dealing with. They are already creating the future of our information society today.

Computer scientists? These are the ones who sit at night in front of the screen and feed on pizza. Aren't they?

Many people know the cliché: Computer scientists are male nerds who sit at their computer screens night after night, live off pizza and Coke, have hardly any social contacts, and have neither influence nor take on leadership tasks in the company.

The graduates of our degree course know a different kind of computer science:

  • Gathering requirements by interacting with the customers directly,
  • Discussions with members of the most diverse fields - from engineers on an oil rig to nursing staff in a retirement home,
  • Developing solutions with constant consultation and feedback in the team,
  • Continuing education and participation in international communities,
  • Regional ties through local user groups,
  • Family-compatible jobs for members of virtual teams.

Objectives of the course

The aim of the Bachelor's degree course in "Applied Computer Science" is to provide a scientifically sound, application-oriented course of study that optimally prepares graduates for a successful professional life in the field of information technology. The degree course in Computer Science is primarily software-oriented. Since computer science is a cross-sectional technology, the courses offered in Computer Science are interdisciplinary. The Bachelor's course enables students to independently and economically implement the concepts and procedures of computer science in the following subject areas:

  • Administration of computer systems, operating system and network security, system and network management, parallel processing
  • Network reference models, passive and active components, protocols
  • Organisation and analysis of large amounts of data, transactions, synchronisation, O/R mapping, persistence frameworks, application servers
  • Internet technologies, e-commerce systems, XML technologies, software agents, semantic web, graphical information systems
  • Software engineering methods for developing large software systems, software architecture, design patterns, distributed systems, middleware
  • Special topics in software engineering such as project management, quality assurance, user interfaces and software ergonomics
  • Methods and applications of computer graphics, animation and image processing

Course prerequisites

What are the prerequisites? You should enjoy brainteasers and puzzles, communicating with other people, dealing with mathematics, a wide range of applications and technical challenges. Favourable prerequisites for successful computer science studies are good written and oral expression, good abstraction skills and, because of the constantly developing subject area, a high willingness to learn.

Entitlement to study in the Bachelor's course in “Applied Computer Science" is proven by the general university entrance qualification, the subject-related university entrance qualification, the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, or a previous education recognised by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs as being of equal value.

Admission is granted according to the local allocation procedure. Separate application deadlines apply to applications with foreign educational certificates.

Why study with us? The reasons are aplenty!

  • All of our professors are not only scientists, but have also worked in companies themselves and know the IT industry.
  • Practical projects with companies are integrated into the course.
  • We teach not only with lectures, but with many practical exercises every week, e.g. in pairs with the professor at the computer.
  • With us you learn to think in algorithms, in models, in concurrent processes, in layers and architectures: Concepts and methods that will last a whole professional life, beyond current trends.
  • Only 25 students share one professor.
  • Many students work in our research projects on many current topics in computer science.
