The mission statement of the HsH

Dear Sir/Madam,

Who are we? Who do we want to be? These questions are answered by the new mission statement of the Hochschule Hannover (Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts), which was developed through an interactive, university-wide dialogue.

It describes where the HsH wants to be in the future and forms the guideline for the further development of our cooperation and the positioning of the HsH.

Our common task now is to contribute to turning the mission statement into a living culture - to turning vision into reality. To this end, we will work together to fill it with substance in our daily university life.

HsH - WE PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE WORKING WORLDS OF TOMORROW!

Preamble

The Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts has developed this mission statement through an intensive, broad-based university-wide dialogue. It defines - as a concretisation of the vision formulated by the Executive Board in 2017 - directions and goals that will be decisive for the actions and cooperation of all those working at the university in the coming years.

The order of the guiding principles is not a ranking - the formulation of the high quality standards in teaching, research, technology and administration at the beginning and the assumption of civil society responsibility at the end form the framework for the guiding ideas in between.

The mission statement 2019 replaces the mission statement that has been valid since 2004. The profile of the Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts described there continues to apply in an expanded form:

 

We are a regionally anchored, internationally oriented university with a wide range of courses in the fields of engineering, economics, cultural studies, social sciences, computer science and design.

(1) High quality standards in teaching, research, technology and administration

We strive for the highest possible level of quality in all areas of our university.

The employability of our graduates as the result of a scientifically sound qualification is the elementary quality feature of our university across all subjects and study programmes.

This is guaranteed by the strong application orientation in teaching and research as well as the outstanding qualifications of our lecturers in both science and practice.

In order to constantly and verifiably improve ourselves, we practice systematic quality management. Quality in teaching, research, technology and administration is developed through transparent processes and reliable cooperation between people.

 

(2) Higher education as personality development and the transmission of values.

As a quality criterion of education, the ability to think and judge independently is an integral part of our university culture and thus of our understanding of knowledge transfer and competence acquisition. Our students are able to recognise complexity and handle it appropriately, taking into account constantly changing conditions in the world of work and society.

For us, study and personal development are inseparably linked.

We see each person in their individuality and value them as part of a heterogeneous community.

We take into account and use the difference and diversity of personalities of all those working at the university as well as our subject cultures as an enriching added value.

Our goal is to support each and every individual in finding the right place for him or herself in the working worlds of tomorrow.

 

(3) Tangible joy in learning, teaching and research

We perform our tasks in teaching and research with enthusiasm and commitment and develop, question and shape the future together with partners from business, science and society.

At our university, students experience and develop the opportunity and courage to work and learn on their own responsibility. The students are supported by teachers and staff who share a holistic and comprehensive understanding of service.

For this purpose, we create an environment that is characterised by

  • Stimulation and recognition of performance,
  • Mutual appreciation, respect and fairness,
  • Offering a variety of perspectives and ways of living and solving problems

 

(4) Exemplary employer

Reliable structures and processes as well as clear responsibilities create security and enable autonomous decision-making.

Continuing education and health promotion have a high priority at our university. The motivation and job satisfaction of our staff are decisive success factors and contribute to their identification with the university.

The study and working conditions at our university are flexible and family-friendly; we adapt them to the diversity of life plans and realities of university members and university staff.

 

(5) Respectful cooperation and lively communication

For us, togetherness is paramount. We are ONE university with common goals and values that unite us.

Our university culture is characterised by openness and transparency. This implies constructive and lively communication. We support each other, approach each other and look for solutions together.

 
(6) International orientation and cultural diversity

We cultivate interculturality and internationality as lived diversity and natural components of the university culture.

Our university systematically promotes its international and intercultural orientation:

  • by expanding strategic partnerships,
  • by facilitating international mobility, and
  • by expanding the linguistic and intercultural handling competences of all university members and staff.
 
(7) Assumption of civil society responsibility

We are aware of our role model function as a university in society. This includes consideration of social, economic and ecological sustainability.

Our overarching aspiration is to prepare graduates of our university to assume civic responsibility and to enable them to reflect ethically on their professional actions.

Socially relevant competences and skills, especially a sense for inequalities and equal opportunities, are trained in our everyday interactions, attitudes and actions.

We assume social responsibility in our teaching and research. In doing so, we involve our students and give room to a critically appreciative attitude.
